Brooke plays with proportion in this rock-tinged, 80s-vibing ensemble that pairs a trendy choker-neck sweater with leather-panelled denim. What really caught my eye here is the super-fun play on proportion: an oversize top combined with slim bottoms. Oversize is a massive trend right now and it also happens to be a comfy one. The key to wearing it like a fashionista is to use it in a way that flatters your body. One fab way to do this is to combine it with a contrasting silhouette, as Brooke did here. I’m head-over-stilettos for the fierce iteration she chose (and I’ll do plenty of raving about that at a later date ;), but I thought we’d explore a more chill version of her look, one that’s more “inspired by” than a precise replica. Start with your favorite/handiest/only clean skinny jeans. I’m obsessed with blue denim at the moment, but black will 100% work as well. Next up: boxy sweater. Reach for a classic neutral (ivory (yum!), gray, beige, navy) or a cozy color (burgundy, forest green, plum). If you don’t currently own your own oversize piece, steal…erm borrow… one from your boyfriend, brother, sister, willing-to-donate aunt, random passer-by (I mean, it's fashion..drastic measures are expected), basically anyone with a sweater a size or three up from what you normally wear. Give the outfit a dose of femininity by choosing a piece with ruffle accents, lace or crochet details, or wearing it draped off of one shoulder. Then, contrast that vibe by pairing it with totally non-girly combat boots (or any similarly chill flat ankle boots). Tie them off about three quarters of the way up and let the tongue flap to totally cement your cool-girl status. Carry your trinkets in a broken-in leather backpack (suede or embroidered will work nicely too). Alternatively, go with a simple silhouette. Consider styling it with a frontal half-tuck (fun but not required :)). Give the look a shot of personality by finishing it with intriguing flats: floral brocade, embroidered or bejeweled, fur-puff embellished, statement-making print – whatever floats your ducks in a row. Let your bag be your baubletry with a chain-handled crossbody, or add your own bag charms, brooches, silk flowers or scarf to a simpler bag. And boom: you’re cute, cool and super-cozy …right in time for a holiday dinner. You slayer you ;)
